Little me swimming 🏊‍♀️ Hello again dear Greta SY ForTuna We checked out of St Barths at Gustavia, but made our way for an overnight stop in a quiet bay on Ile Fourchue, an uninhabited and private island a few miles North West of St Barths. The tiny bay had a few mooring buoys and we were able to pick up a mooring close to the shore. We spent the day swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. Ile Fourchue has four rocky peaks in its “corners” and the views are insane. From each peak you can see St Barths, St Martin, Saba, St Eustatius , St Kitts, and Anguilla. We flew the drone and watched the sunset from the top together with our friends from SY WhenSailing and SY Kon-Tiki. Hike to the top We stopped overnight on the uninhabited island of Tintamarre, a lovely day anchorage but a very rolly mooring spot.... Shell Beach Our mooring, Gustavia St Barths will always be the place to be! For a small island, St. Barth feels like a much bigger place. Above the Caribbean’s turquoise waters, the hills rise asymmetrically and pitch toward one slope, much like an ocean wave. The towering palms, night-blooming cacti and decorative blooms of wild trumpets and frangipanis, make it hard to imagine that all of St. Barth was once an active volcano. 7 min walk from the Marina:Shell Beach Gustavia The population of St. Barth is approximately 9,000 people, most of whom are French expatriates or the descendants of the original French settlers. Barbuda Princess Diana Beach Barbuda is a private oasis of pink- and white-sand beaches that’s known for being one of Princess Diana’s favorite destinations. But the peaceful Caribbean island was devastated in 2017 when Hurricane Irma hit! Exciting crossing to Barbuda! Crossing Antigua - Barbuda Once we cleared the protection of the reefs north of Antigua a big squall came through and the wind was very gusty. If you are 6nm away from Barbuda, you still can’t see it, it is a very flat island. It’s not easy to navigate through the shallow waters…. but look at the turquoise waters! No boats in sight, but we do see the AIS of 2 boats anchored on the SE tip under Spanish Point. It’s too late in the day for us to navigate across Gravenor Bay, we can only do that safely when the sun is up and we can see the reefs. Paradise So we aim to anchor next to Coco Point Lodge. We anchor close to the shore in 5m of turquoise water. There is a beautiful long white beach in front of us! Bonjour…. This place feels more European than Caribbean, it’s charm and people are warm and enchanting. Les Saintes are a group of nine islands six miles off the coast of Basse-Terre. Only two are inhabited, with most sailboats heading to Terre-de-Haut for old-school Caribbean charm mixed with buildings which look like they’ve been transplanted from Brittany. Les Saintes Bay on Terre de Haut is considered to be one of the most beautiful bays in the world and is best experienced from above – the views over the bay from Fort Napoleon are spectacular. From the top, we could see our anchorage and surrounding islands. Fort Napoleon sits on a hilltop overlooking town, offering stunning views of Terre de Haut, as well as housing a small but interesting museum. I loved being able to eat all my favorite French foods – especially after the heavy and deep-fried cuisine of Dominica and I loved hearing the language of love all around me. I hope Les Saintes continues to stay off the radar for years to come. Because that is why it is special. If you really want an incredible Caribbean experience away from the big resorts – you should definitely consider Les Saintes. You won’t regret it. We recommend to explore Le Bourg, Terre-de-Haut’s capital very early in the morning before the day tours from Guadeloupe arrive. Get lost in the tiny alleyways of the Old Town while admiring the colorful gingerbread houses with their gardens and small restaurants. The neighborhood of Le Mouillage, near the harbor, is where you will find many historical buildings and a beautiful beach with pélicans and iguanas. Dominica 🇩🇲 Ankerplatz bei Pays Dominica ist definitiv bisher mein Star unter den Englischen Antillen, nicht nur weil die Insel die Kulisse für den Film Pirates of the Caribbean 2 war. Die Insel ist ein herrliches Naturparadies mit unberührten und wilden Stränden, Flüssen und einer herrlichen Unterwasserwelt. Ein einziger, riesiger tropischer Garten! Dominica ist nur 50 Kilometer lang und 22 Kilometer breit. Etwa 73.000 Menschen leben hier. Davon - und das ist eine Besonderheit - rund 2.200 Ureinwohner. Gesprochen wird hier hauptsächlich Englisch, einige Bewohner unterhalten sich auch auf Kreolisch. Middleham Falls ist Dominicas höchster Wasserfall ! Wir wanderten im strömenden, tropischen Regen bei 28 Grad für 2,5 Sunden durch den Regenwald und es war grandios! Selten so einen gewaltigen Wasserfall in einem Urwald gesehen. Die Prince-Rupert-Bay, eine grosse Bucht im Nordwesten der Insel, geschützt vor Wind aus N-NE-E-SE, ist der beste Ankerplatz auf Dominica. Seicht abfallender, gut haltender Sandgrund mit Seegrasfeldern. Mit Kim und Marie beim Tauchen PAYS, die Organisation der Führer und Boatboys dort, haben etwa 35 Moorings ausliegen, man kann auch ankern. Sie bieten neben Security auch die alle Touren an, den Indian River und die Chocolate Factory war wunderschön. Am Strand gibt es einige nette Restaurants, wo sich bei Sonnenuntergang alle Segler treffen. Ihrem Namen hat Dominica dem Entdecker Christopher Kolumbus zu verdanken. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner zweiten Atlantikreise fuhr Kolumbus am 3. November 1493 an einem bis dahin unbekannten Eiland der Karibik vorbei. Auch wenn ihm an diesen Tag keine Zeit für einen Inselrundgang blieb, gab er der Inselschönheit trotzdem einen Namen. Dabei richtete er sich nach dem Wochentag, der zu Lebzeiten ein Sonntag war - und so erhielt Dominica ihren Namen. Bonsoir Martinique Saint Anne Ankerplatz mit Beach Bar Okay, wir als Langzeitsegler sind irgendwie verwöhnt. In den letzten Jahren haben wir die schönsten Segel-Reviere, Küstenstädte, Mini-Inseln und fast jede Bucht von der Ostsee bis in die Türkei sowie fast alle kanarischen Inseln be-segelt und erkundet. Zanzibar Martinique Immer auf der Suche nach dem ultimativen Paradies sind wir jetzt einen Monat in der Karibik unterwegs und die Bilanz ist positiv, aber auch durchaus gemischt. Der spannendste Moment ist und bleibt immer der erste Eindruck, wenn wir uns einer neuen Insel nähern. Manchmal ist es das Licht, oder auch Geräusche oder Gerüche, dann wiederum prägen sich die Häuser am Strand ein. Oder ein anderes Mal erstrahlt sogar die Insel in ganz speziellen Farben. Im Fall von Martinique sind es die Palmen und die tropischen Blumen. Anchorage Ambra Anse Mitan Markt bei Le Marin Martinique liegt mitten in der Karibik und gehört zu Frankreich und dies merkt man sofort. Alle Annehmlichkeiten – wie das Bezahlen in Euro, das Telefonieren im heimischen Netz, und ein recht westlicher Lebensstil erwarten euch also auch auf der Insel. Baguette, Croissant und Carrefour überall. Dementsprechend muss man auch mit französischen Preisen rechnen. In guten Restaurants ist es hier teurer als in München. Gute Restaurants gibt es allerdings wenige, die regionale Küche ist im einiges besser als auf St.Lucia aber insgesamt zu viel Frittiertes, wenig Auswahl an Gemüse und Früchten und überraschend wenig frischen Fisch! Ankerfeld bei Le Marin Meine Highlights auf Martinique kommen hier: Anse Mitan Die Ankerplätze vor Saint Anne und Anse Mitan im Süden von Martinique sind perfekt und Ihr könnt problemlos auf sandigem Grund ankern. A sailboat represents your life. The hull is like your body that allows you to move around and do things. The winds are like your thoughts that fill the sails of your mind and push you from one destination or scenario to the next. If we look around, the sea is filled with other sailing vessels. Most let the wind take them where it will. The sails fill up with any gust that arises so the journey through life is aimless and bewildering, since the destination is constantly changing. Many people would really like to get somewhere. They just haven't learned how to operate the jib and the boom, how to lower the sails in a violent storm. Some boats glide along efficiently. They seem to effortlessly move toward a destination. I think we all want to be like that boat that sails effortlessly and purposefully. Let’s open our minds, as if our minds were sails….. Start Las Palmas Let’s ask the Captain: How you did you like the Atlantic Crossing in a sailboat and what were your impressions? In the first few days, I hardly knew an answer to the question and just said amazing or great. In the meantime (5 days later) I reflect a lot about the question and realize more and more what really makes the trip special for me. Strong NE Wind near Las Palmas Here is a first summary, but there is more to come: We decided to join the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers ) and that was a great decision. The route that we took was from Gran Canaria, an island off the west coast of Africa, directly to St Lucia in the Caribbean. The ARC community is great and they are looking after each other on the way. In case you need help, you will get support and everyone will try to do what they can. In addition there is a great preparation, handbook, online training, live events, a week of preparation in Las Palmas and finally a lot of parties. In case we would do it again, we would join the ARC again. Las Palmas and the Canarian Islands: Don’t leave it to the last minute- the Islands are great and quite different.Mooring fees are affordable. Sometimes it is not that easy to find a weather window in Gibraltar for your departure. You can go directly, visit Marocco on the way or go via Madeira. We went directly which is approximately 600sm and we had a great trip. This was a great preparation for our crew and exposure to Atlantic sailing. We visited Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Gomera and Tenerife and stayed 4 weeks on the islands. After a week of socializing, parties, training, pre-cooking, provisioning [...]

Catch of the day, Marigot Bay Marigot Bay is located on the western coast of the Caribbean island country of Saint Lucia, 3.75 miles southwest from Castries The nature of the Caribbean islands is breathtaking and if you are in the right mood, you will feel very energized and refreshed after a day soaking in all this spectacular natural beauty and the tranquility of it all. Road trip to Marigot Bay Heading south along the west coast to Marigot Bay and a tropical cove with a charismatic cluster of beachfront shacks and fishing boats straight out of a Death In Paradise episode. Stranded in paradise, green rainforest all around! Lots of colorful houses and markets beautifully nestled inside of the lush nature. Christmas vibes… St Lucia is a tiny island, just 27 miles long and 14 wide. As a rule of thumb, the north is dry and more developed, the south lush and laidback, with everything in between a dense tangle of tropical rainforest. Hire a car and you’ll find the roads tricky and mountainous, like driving on a badly coiled hosepipe into the rainforest’s heart. Castries is very much a small city with alot of hustle and buste. There is an indoor market here which sells a lot of local fruit, vegetables and a lot of souvenirs. Wonderful experience to see the local people selling their wares. Some goods are handmade by locals and other items are the usual commercial grade tourist trinkets. Einige Finisher der ARC fühlen sich anscheinend wie neue Menschen. Wow! Sie sind verändert, so motiviert, happy und leuchten irgendwie von innen. Die Flaute und das tagelange kreuzen haben alle auf RESET gesetzt. Sehr interessant…. Einer sagt, er hat so viel gelernt und ist trotz Schlafmangel so motiviert für sein neues Leben ! Still waiting for Ambra Der Hafen in Rodney Bay ist noch fast leer und die Finisher sind an einem krassen Dauergrinsen zu erkennen. Die Teams haben sich viel mit Strategie beschäftigt und haben auch Strategen an Bord, die bezahlt wurden. Unser Outdoor Wohnzimmer mit Blick auf die Einfahrt der ARC Schiffe Kleines Résumé der Profi-Strategen : Man bewegt sich auf dem ATLANTIC in sich permanent verändernden Bedingungen wie Wind und Wellen-Strömung. Dann gilt es, von Moment zu Moment neu zu entscheiden: Bleibe ich auf dem Kurs oder wende ich und fahre in die andere Richtung? Die Physik des Segelns zwingt permanent zu einer klaren Entscheidung. Somit ist nicht entscheiden immer ein Fehler. Oft ist das Verzögern von Entscheidungen auch ein Manko. In der Regel hat man sich nach predicted wind für eine bestimmte Strategie entschieden und darin investiert. Man muss drei Schritte voraus denken und in der Lage sein, Probleme zu antizipieren. Deshalb sollte man auch in schwierigen Verhältnissen mit Selbstvertrauen die eigene Strategie grundsätzlich einhalten: rechts oder eben links auf dem Kurs [...]

Die Tage kommen und gehen. Wie Wellen, aus Nord-Ost umspielen sie das Boot für eine Sekunde, scheinen es ablenken zu wollen von seinem Kurs, ein minütiges, sich endlos wiederholendes Spiel, Natur gegen Schiff. Routinen pflegen sich ein, ritualisiert, fast monoton arbeitet die Crew Hand in Hand. 19-22,22-1, 1-4 und 4-7 Uhr. Der Kapitän immer standby…. Eingespielt wie Musiknoten: Jacke, Stirnlampe auf rot, Logbuch Eintrag zum Verständnis der Situation, Harness und Lifejacket,…… danach Stille. Heute ist vieles anders. Betriebsamkeiten allenthalben. Maniküre/Pediküre, neue Bärte und Frisuren für Tim, Torsten und André. Bilgen reinigen, Bestandsaufnahme Kühlschrank, faules Zeug weg, neues Bettzeug rein, frische Handtücher. Fast Frühjahrsputz auf der Ambra die tapfer ihre Bahnen zieht. André macht frisches Brot, Hoffnung auf Schönes. Immer weiter in den Westen bei 20 kn, Kurs 265 Grad. Etmal 180sm! Ambra Food Blog @thomashighfield ! Via 📡: Yesterday we celebrated our „midway day“ as we passed the 1.500 nm to go. So, we came out with special dishes to celebrate this special day! Accordingly as breakfast we served the crew original German christmas „Stollen“ with marzipane. A nice sweet start into another sunny day. The next highlight for this „peak celebration day“ was a freshly made Kaiserschmarrn (a traditional sweet pancake dish from Austria) with roasted Almond slices, powder sugar and mashed apples for lunch. After these nice sweet treats, for dinner we cooked pan seared steaks with a porcini mushroom sauce and as side dishes mashed potatos blended with olive oil, minced garlic and lemon zest, together with roasted eggplants spiced up with anchovies. The dinner was rounded up with a glass of the delicious red Marques de Riscal. Am Sonntag, dem 20.11. war es soweit. Um 13 Uhr fiel für unsere Ambra der Startschuss für die ARC Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. Der Start in Las Palmas Die Crew hat viel gearbeitet in den letzten Tagen. Die letzten Reparaturen sind ausgeführt. Nautor Swan hat noch einen neuen, klappbaren Tisch und einen neuen Schwarzwassertank geliefert und eingebaut. Alles gewaschen, desinfiziert und verpackt! Unsere beiden Crew-Mitglieder Thomas und Andreas kochten Tag und Nacht auf Sterne-Niveau. In unserem angemieteten Apartment am Strand haben sie die feinsten Gerichte vorbereitet und auch noch alles persönlich frisch eingekauft auf diversen Märkten. Im Crew Apartment wurde gekocht! Mit Blick auf den Strand… Wir haben viele Seminare gemacht, Sicherheitstrainings absolviert, bunkerten gefühlt eine Tonne Lebensmittel und 300 Liter Getränke, befestigten die Obstnetze, sicherten jedes einzelne Teil in den Schränken, eigentlich wurde die Ambra auch innen einmal komplett auf den Kopf gestellt… ein Teppich schützt jetzt das Teakholz in der Galley und eine Dusche wurde zum Vorratskeller. André mit dem neuen Teppich Auf zum Crew Aperitif! Wir hatten tolle Crew-Dinner, eine Flaggen-Parade mit allen Crews, eine klasse 70er Party, ein Swan Frühstück am Hafen und die Mädels haben einen Ausflug in die Dünen im Süden und in die Altstadt gemacht. Außerdem natürlich ein paar Thai Massagen… Eröffnungsfeier 70 er Party Die Ambra Crew Es war toll jeden Abend beim Sundowner so viele Menschen aus verschiedenen Ländern zu treffen, die sich hochmotiviert ihren Lebenstraum erfüllen. Wir haben Pläne geschmiedet, uns für die Karibik verabredet und sind jetzt voller Vorfreude. Tropical Paradise La Gomera Intensiv blaues Meer, Schweinswale, schroffe Klippen an der Küste, üppig grüne Schluchten und die majestätische Berge im Landesinnern machen den besonderen Charme von La Gomera aus. Unser Strand an der Marina San Sebastián Schroffe Täler, ursprüngliche Strände und kleine Fischerdörfer, und das alles auf einer Insel! Die dschungeligen Wanderwege sind ein echtes Paradies für alle Naturliebhaber! Aufgrund des Passateinflusses ist die Nordküste für Segler uninteressant, Ankerbuchten finden sich vereinzelt an der Südküste. Ankerplatz an der Südküste Frischer Fisch und Krustentiere 🦞 sind hier top und preiswert! Wir haben uns einen 500er Fiat Cabrio für 3 Tage gemietet, direkt am Hafen (40 Euro am Tag) und damit bequem die Insel erkundet. Fiat 500 C Auf jeden Fall sehen muss man den Garajonay-Nationalpark. Er bildet das Herz La Gomeras und gehört seit 1986 wegen seines besonderen Ökosystems zum UNESCO-Welterbe. Mit seinem üppigen Lorbeerwaldbestand besitzt La Gomera mehr als die Hälfte der erhaltenen Laurisilva der gesamten Kanarischen Inseln. Neben den mächtigen Lorbeerbäumen finden sich hier die verschiedensten Pflanzenarten wie die bis zu 20 Meter hohen Baumheiden. Unzählige Wanderwege gibt es hier…. Masca, the prettiest village in Tenerife ! The view is fascinating… Wir sind vor ein paar Tagen von Gran Canaria (Puerto de Mogán) aus bei herrlichem Sonnenschein und Temperaturen um die 25 Grad Richtung Teneriffa gesegelt (50 Seemeilen) und hatten einen Traumtag auf See. Champagner-Segeln nach Teneriffa! Marina San Miguel, Teneriffa Ambra liegt jetzt sicher hier in der Marina San Miguel und wir treffen Segelfreunde, haben einen kleinen Mietwagen für 4 Tage gemietet und erkunden die Insel. The road from Marina San Miguel to Masca and then Buenavista is one of the most spectacular we have ever seen! Gomera view Tipp: Gewaltige Schluchten in einem Vulkankrater im Teno-Gebirge Unglaubliche Ausblicke Wer kurvenreiche Strecken mag, wird die Straße nach Masca lieben. Bergauf haben wir hier ständig vom ersten in den zweiten Gang und wieder zurück geschaltet und bergab kann man nur beten, dass in den Kurven kein Bus entgegen kommt. Die Straße ist so schmal, dass zwei Fahrzeuge immer nur ganz knapp aneinander vorbei kommen. Aber….. der Weg lohnt sich unbedingt: Der Blick von oben in die Schluchten voller Kakteen und Palmen ist so atemberaubend schön. Wir bleiben immer wieder stehen und genießen….. am Horizont dann das tief blaue Meer und irgendwo weiter draußen La Gomera. Wir sind begeistert! Masca ist übrigens ein Bergdorf im Nordwesten der Insel und hat ca. 100 Einwohner und nur 80 Häuser. Es liegt 650-800 m hoch im Teno-Gebirge und war bis in die 1960er Jahre nur über eine Sandpiste von Santiago del Teide zu erreichen. Möglicherweise war Masca ehemals ein Fluchtdorf vor den Piraten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Love it! Alles Banane! Wir sind mittendrin im Bananenland und wandern durch Bananen-Plantagen. Beautiful India: Party Modus ON Party ohne Ende zum Abschied Mit Worten kann man die vergangene Woche unmöglich beschreiben, es war uns ein einziges Fest! Porto Colom im Hafen Off to an Indian themed “Bollywood Party weekend “with our best friends from Germany! And as the name suggested, so was the decoration: magical. The venue was decorated beautifully with orange, pink and purple flowers and lights, and it did seem like a fairyland. We danced the night away, 100% FUN 🤩 Pure Magic 100%Fun Moments forever This Is How to Throw a Magical Indian Bollywood Themed Party… Auf Mallorca einen Liegeplatz für ein Schiff unserer Größe und Tiefgang zu finden ist nicht so leicht. Da wir auf mehreren Parties auf der Mallorca eingeladen waren, wollten wir Ambra nicht über Nacht an Bojen hängen lassen, da doch ein größeres Gewitter angesagt war. Alle da und gut drauf! Gleich bei der Ankunft in Porto Colom am Hafen dann die Überraschung: Über Funk erfahren wir, dass ein Freund einen Liegeplatz für uns gebucht hat (yes!) und als wir anlegen und ich die Leine rüberwerfen will, steht da tatsächlich unsere Freundin Anke am Steg, die auch gleich einen Tisch zum Dinner reserviert hat. It’s time for a long passage… Ciao Sardegna 🇮🇹 Our Route ! We got up at 4 am, and we set sail in direction Spain 🇪🇸 Menorca Island. (207 nautical miles/37 hours) Indeed we knew we would have encountered pretty windy conditions up to 29 knots of wind and high waves. Sunrise…… Sunset 🌅 In order to catch the south easterly wind, we sailed first south west. The wind increased after we passed the wind shelter of Sardegna. Perfect time to go downwind with our parasail. Easy sailing but after some hours the wind blow over 25kn. To reef the 240sqm sail we had to get the sock cover over the sail. Andre pulled hard standing on the bow. We changed to jib only and continued our journey with over 8kn. In the evening hours it was perfect wind to set the furl storm sail in lighter conditions. Parasail 240sqm We are so tired …. Everything’s harder to do. It’s like your body is extremely drunk but your head is clear and sober – well until the sleep deprivation kicks in. Im Südwesten von Sardinien beginnt bei Chia die sogenannte Costa del Sud - eine wildromatische, fast völlig unbebaute und einsame Küste, die sich mit schroffen Felsen und vielen wunderschönen Buchten rund um die südwestliche Spitze Sardiniens windet. Im Hinterland nur Berge und Macchia. Immer wieder trifft man entlang der Costa del Sud auch auf einzelne Strände - Allesamt extrem schön und völlig abgelegen. Paradise ….. mit Einschränkungen Cala Zafferano Der südlichste Punkt Sardiniens wird vom Capo Teulada gebildet. Die Cala Zafferano ist militärisches Sperrgebiet, doch zum Gück macht auch das Militär im Sommer das, was dann eigentlich ganz Italien macht: Pause. Und so ist die Küste im Sommer per Boot für jedermann zugänglich, was sich absolut lohnt. Ankern nur im Juli und August Eine sardische Zeitung sprach im Mai 22 von einem beeindruckenden Manöver: Mehr als 4000 Soldaten aus sieben Nato-Staaten sollen an Bord von mehr als 65 Schiffen und U-Booten gewesen sein, darunter der italienische, mit F-35-Kampfjets bestückte Flugzeugträger »Cavour«. Glasklares Wasser unter der Ambra Eine Generalprobe der neuesten Waffen. Manche Segler trauten ihren Augen nicht: Sie erfuhren von einem der größten Nato-Manöver der vergangenen Jahrzehnte, angekündigt mit wenigen Tagen Vorlaufzeit. Nur im Juli und August dürfen Sportboote hier über Nacht bleiben und auch nur manchmal…. Wir liegen hier 2 Tage auf 5m ungestört vor Anker, essen selbst gefangenen Thunfisch und genießen die Ruhe und das kristallklare Wasser.
