Chasing Horizons: Why Owning a Sailboat Will Change Your Life

There’s a moment every sailor knows.

The engine is off. The sails are full. The wake smooths out behind you like a brushstroke across glass. And suddenly the world feels… right.

That feeling is why I believe, with every salt-crusted fiber of my being, that everyone who loves the sea should experience owning (or at least living like they own) a sailboat at some point in their life. Not to impress. Not to collect miles. But to collect mornings, anchorages, sunsets, and stories that simply don’t exist on land.

Over the years, my bow has pointed toward many corners of the planet. Some places dazzled me. Some surprised me. A few completely rewired my idea of paradise.

Here’s my personal ranking of the sailing destinations that have shaped me the most so far – and maybe, just maybe, will spark your own future course.

From Italy to the Exumas: A Sailor’s Ranking of the Places That Steal Your Soul

1. Italy – Where Sailing Feels Like Living Inside a Painting

(South Italy, Tuscan Islands & Sardegna)

Italy doesn’t just welcome sailors. It seduces them.

Drop anchor off a tiny island in the Tuscan Archipelago and you’re surrounded by water so clear it looks fake. Sail the Amalfi Coast and every headland reveals another pastel village clinging to cliffs like it was hand-placed by an artist.

Sardegna deserves a category of its own. Granite rock formations, emerald bays, and beaches that rival anything in the Caribbean – with the added bonus of espresso and fresh pasta never being far away.

Why Italy sits at the top for me:

• Endless variety: dramatic cliffs, gentle sandy bays, lively ports, sleepy fishing villages

• Food that becomes part of the voyage

• A sailing culture that feels warm, proud, and timeless

Italy taught me that sailing isn’t just about moving – it’s about savoring.

2. France – Wild Beauty Meets Effortless Cool

(Corsica & Saint-Tropez)

Corsica feels raw in the best possible way.

Rugged mountains crash straight into deep blue water. Anchorages feel untouched. You wake up with goats on shore and go to sleep with stars that seem close enough to grab.

Then there’s Saint-Tropez – glamorous, yes, but also strangely relaxed if you arrive by sailboat. You slip past the crowds, drop anchor outside the harbor, and suddenly you’re part of a quieter, cooler version of the Riviera.

France showed me contrast:

• Untamed nature in Corsica

• Sophisticated coastal living in the south

• Incredible bakeries in both

Sailing here feels adventurous and elegant at the same time.

3. Greece – The Birthplace of Island Hopping Magic

If someone asked me where to start their sailing life, Greece might be my answer.

Thousands of islands. Predictable winds. Short hops between anchorages. White villages, blue domes, and harbors that look like postcards.

But what really makes Greece special is how easy it is to fall into rhythm:

Sail in the morning. Swim at lunch. Explore ashore in the afternoon. Taverna at sunset.

Repeat.

Why Greece is a sailor’s playground:

• Simple navigation

• Friendly ports

• Affordable compared to many Mediterranean spots

• Deep sense of history everywhere you drop anchor

Greece feels like freedom on repeat.

4. Bahamas & Exumas – Shallow Water Dreams

This is where your idea of “blue” gets permanently recalibrated.

The Bahamas, especially the Exumas, offer water so shallow and clear you can watch your anchor set in ten meters of visibility. Sandbars that appear at low tide. Swimming pigs. Remote cays where you’re the only boat in sight.

Life slows way down here – and that’s the whole point.

What makes the Bahamas unforgettable:

• Easy line-of-sight navigation

• Warm water year-round

• Endless anchorages

• A true barefoot sailing culture

If Italy is about flavor, the Bahamas are about feeling weightless.

5. Canary Islands – The Gateway to Big Dreams

The Canaries feel like the threshold between coastal cruising and ocean adventure.

Volcanic landscapes. Strong Atlantic winds. Long passages between islands. It’s where sailors sharpen skills, test boats, and start dreaming about crossing oceans.

They’re raw, real, and incredibly alive.

Why I love sailing here:

• Consistent trade winds

• Diverse islands, each with its own personality

• A massive international sailing community

The Canaries whisper: You’re capable of more than you think.

Why Owning Your Own Sailboat Changes Everything

Charters are great. Day sails are fun.

But owning your own boat?

That’s different.

It becomes your tiny floating universe. Your escape pod. Your teacher. Your home.

You stop asking, “Where can I go this week?”

You start asking, “Where do I want to wake up tomorrow?”

You learn patience from the wind. Confidence from handling challenges. Gratitude from simple sunsets.

And slowly, quietly, your life gets bigger.

Final Thoughts From the Helm

You don’t need a perfect boat.

You don’t need infinite money.

You don’t need decades of experience.

You need curiosity. Courage. And the willingness to start.

Because somewhere out there is an anchorage that will change you.

And the only way to find it…

is to cast off.

Fair winds,

and see you out there 🌊⛵

Love. Biggi

More to come….

Sailing in Turkey is a hidden gem – incredible anchorages, warm hospitality, and unbelievably good food, and real tip: always leave room in your plans for a spontaneous stop at a small family-run marina or restaurant, because some of the best experiences happen where you didn’t intend to go.
